delgany house

A new build house within a garden in Co. Wicklow

This project involved the construction of a new build house located within the garden of an existing house just outside the village of Delgany in County Wicklow.

The Architects gave great consideration in the placement and orientation of the new house to maximise the views, light and to retain the existing mature trees on the site so as to create the feeling of the house becoming part of the existing landscape. The site area itself was quite large but the proximity of the stream running through it meant that the new house could only be placed the upper western side of the plot. The small stream running through the site creates two separate gardens spaces. The house is situated within a mature garden and the placing of the new house reacted to this.

The palette of materials used externally was a reaction to the site and surroundings, the buff brick chosen for the walls resonates with the planting and trees that surround the site. Internally white walls and natural floor finishes create a bright and calming internal atmosphere. The form of both volumes and their arrangement are typical of the rural setting in which the house is located.
